A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
