The star has donated the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which operates to preserve the UK's small music venues.

Fender was awarded the award on mid-October as his latest record his work was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist numerous small stages across Britain.

The donation helped locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from water damage, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The concept that revenue from shows in large arenas backs the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

Last week, the trust announced it had rescued a couple of local spots in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
