The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
