Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
